Taking Kanji Flash Cards with You

Update (2009-03-28)

We've recently updated the offline capabilities of the site. If you're using an iPhone or an iPod touch with at least version 2.1 of the iPhone OS just connect to the site and load a set of cards. All necessary offline data will be automatically saved to your device. You can even close the browser window. Just re-open the site and it will be reloaded even if you aren't connected to the Internet. Save the site to your Home Screen to get back even more easily.

So here's the scenario:

  • You want to study 30 kanji today, but you don't want to sit in front of your computer all day: You've got places to be a people to see.
  • You do have an iPod touch or an iPhone with Internet access at some point in the day
  • Being the popular butterfly that you are, you'll probably end up in places without Internet access, e.g., underground on the subway on your way to a party.
  • Not only do you want to study those 30 kanji, but you also want to study all related vocabulary and similar kanji

And here is your solution.

Connect to the site with Safari on your iPod touch or iPhone then from the Kanji: Pronunciation or Kanji: Japanese -> English module use the Filters form on the right to select a set of kanji to study and check the Take Offline button.

The server will return the cards you've requested and save all related vocabulary and kanji cards to your iPod/iPhone. Now you can study that set of cards all day long even if you don't have an internet connection.

Note that the system will not save your correct and incorrect responses while you are offline. You also won't be able to resubmit the Filters form or move to a different module.

Also, if you don't plan on studying the related vocabulary and similar kanji then you don't need to check the offline button.

Update (2009-04-01)

The site will now keep track of your scores even when you are offline.
